SELWYN COUNTY COUNCIL.
A meeting of the Selwyn County Council was held yesterday morning; presont*-*Mr D. M'Millan (Chairman), Messrs J. G. Murray, W. Boag, W. Dunlop, J. Rennie, T. H. Anson and EL W. P.-ryman. OUAIItMAN’s STATEMENT. The Chairman stated that since last meeting letters had been received from the Department of Agriculture regarding the observance of Arbor Day; from Mr O’Malley, giving a return of traffic on the Bsaley ferry for the past quarter; from the Linwood Borough Council, it) respect to do-jf registration; from the Railway Commissioners, iu reference to letting out Lske Ellesmere; from the Railway Commissioners, relating to the planting of the reserve at Springfield; from Mr Cassidy, applying for a right of way through a plantation, and from Mr Davies, having reference to water-races. MISCELLANEOUS. Mr Anson moved —“ That copies of the Council’s resolution with regard to the Noxious Weeds Bill be sent to the members of Parliament for the district.” The motion was agreed to. The Chairman moved—“ That Messrs Dunlop, York, Paryman and Jameson be appointed to see what trees are wanted for planting at New Brighton on Arbor Day.” The motion was carried. The report of Mr O’Malley was adopted. It was decided, on the morion of Mr Rennie, seconded by Mr Murray—" That as soon as a satisfactory answer is received from the Government, the Council proceed with the work of opening Lake Ellesmere as far as the Ahuriri Lagoon, and that the urgency of the work bs placed before the Government and the members for the County.” The report of the Inspector of Slaughterhouses was read and received. THE UNEMPLOYED. A deputation of the unemployed waited on the Council. Mr Powell asked that some of the men might be taken on to the Council’s works. Mr Fleming said the City Council had found some work for the meu, and he trusted that the Selwyn Council would follow in its wake and assist them to tide over the winter. Too Chairman gold the Council would give every consideration to what had been said, bub he pointed out that its expenditure filtered through the various Road Boards. The Council itself did nob keep a large staff, the only work it did being plantation work which was not of a nature to bo suitable for the unemployed. The Council would consider the statements made by the deputation, and let them know the result. Mr Fleming suggested that the Council should use its influence with the various Road Boards. The Chairman said the Boards were fully alive to the state of the labour market, and had all the funds possible at their disposal. The deputation then thanked the Council, and withdrew. A lengthy discussion ensued, and ultimately Mr Perymuu moved—" That the various Eoad Boards bo intimated that they will ba subsidised £ for £ up to .£3O on works undertaken for the purpose of giving immediate employment to some of the unemployed from Christchurch.” This was seconded by Mr Rennie, and carried nem, con. Accounts were passed to the amount of £95212s 4d. Matters of detail having been disposed of the meeting terminated. SPECIAL MEETING. A special meeting was held, at which the same members wore present. The audited accounts for the year were presented and passed, no exception being taken to any of the items.
