I .Smith, Gapes and Thomson. I ! Apologies for absence were received from Councillors E. Smith and Bennington. In the absence of the Mayor, Councillor Gray, the senior Councillor present, was voted to the chair. a financial. I The Town Clerk reported that the' re- S ceipta since last meeting amounted to £9BB J Us, and the payments to £lßlßlßs 2d, I [leaving a debit balance of £5302 6s 3d. f f CORRESPONDENCE. j Mr H. O/D, Meares wrote, acknowledging r ; the Council’s vote of sympathy with him. J ) Mr C. Cuff wrote stating that the city ; [assessment had been completed, and the j -Court had revised it. The assessment thus | 'completed showed an increase of £IOOO | above lost year’s valuation. I Mr G. M’lntyre, Chairman of Director* | of the New Brighton Tramway Company, | wrote stating that no matter how willing £ his Company might be to comply loyally 5 with the conditions of the lease under H which it held the City Council tramway, it | wished it to be understood that it distin* | guished between repairs and new work, or |. reconstruction, such as new sleepers, in | substitution of decayed ones, for which the | Company did not hold itself responsible. | In answer to the Chairman, Councillor | Wood, Chairman of the Works Committee, | said the only conclusion the Committee had | come to was to abide strictly by the terms | of the lease. | Mr J.. H. Newlyu wrote drawing atten-| tion to recent events which, he stated, had j occurred in connection with the Canter-1 bury Tramway Company, and which placed | the tramway lines under the control of the| Connell. ® Councillor Appleby protested, on tha| ground that there was nothing before the! Council or the public at present. As a| shareholder in the Company, he thought | he should know as much as Mr Newlyu or ’! anyone else, and he considered it prema-!? tnre to say anything about the tramway* | at present. ? The letter was received. | MOTIONS DEFERRED. f : At the request of Councillor Appleby, & the motions standing in Councillor E. if Smith’s name with regard to striking rates |, for watering and fire-prevention purposes I were deferred for a fortnight, owing to hi* - absence on Eire Brigade business. i questions. Councillor Flesher desired to know what had been done in regard to a certain build* iug, as he noticed that a letter from th* owner had been attended to. The City Surveyor said he had written a letter to the owner, and he had also spoken to him about the building, which had been erected contrary to the provisions of the building by-law. THE CITY POPULATION. Councillor Appleby asked if attention had been directed to the returns of popula* tion drawn up by the Registrar-General. In the present ones Christchurch was made to appear one of the smallest towns in New Zealand, whereas Wellington, Auckland and Dunedin had the population of their suburbs added, and presented a respectable number. On a former occasion he had moved in the matter. The boroughs of Linwobd, Sb Albans, &0., made np a respectable figure, and Christchurch., was the second largest populated city in the Colony, instead of containing half the number of inhabitants credited to Welling* ton. He moved—“ That the Registrar* General be requested to include the suburbs of Christchurch in his future estimates of population, a* is done in the cases of the other cities.’* Councillor. Calder seconded the motion, which was carried. MORTUARY CHAPEL., , \ , Councillor Gapes asked (or an extension of time in which to bring up a report of the Committee on the proposed mortuary chapel. The Committee had -written -to several ministers, and had not received all the replies. The time was farther extended, a* requested. < MISCELLANEOUS. Several licenses were recommended and granted. The Fire Brigade Committee reported the acceptance of the tender of Messra i Hallenstein and Co. for the Fire Brigade uniforms and caps at 67a 6d and 7* respectively. The Council ratified the acceptance of the tender. The Chairman said that a vote of £8 j towards the Fire Brigade Library for the purpose of binding the books was allowed to lapse, and required revoting. On tho motion of Councillor J. T. Smith, j seconded by Councillor Cooper, the eum [ was revoted. A discussion relative to the Mayor* visit to Wellington is reported elsewhere.
