MARKET REPORTS .

Mr David Thomas reports upon the live stock market in the Ashburton county for the week ending March 14, as follows On Tuesday, at the Ashburton yards, tho usual weekly sale of live stock was held. Like the past few weeks, the yards were taxed to their utmost, and presented a very busy appearance from daylight to dark, something like 15,000 sheep, 45 head of cattle, and 15 pigs being yarded for the day’s sale. My entry comprised 7000 sheep, 27 head of cattle, and 15 pigs. There were several nice lines of fat and store sheep offered, among which I sold, for various clients, 8 fat four-tooth wethers at 14s sd, 26 cross-bred ewes at 8s lid, 17 do at 13s 3d, 30 merino wethers at 6s 6d, 50 merino ewes at 5a lOd, 35 cross-bred owes at Ss lOd, 544 merino ewes at 7s 9d (grand line), 294 cross-bred ewe a at 12s sd, 104 cross-bred ewes at 9s 3d, 83 cross-bred ewes at 7s 9d, 66 two-tooth cross-bred wethers at 14s 9d, 84 cross-bred lambs at Ss Bd, 80 cross-bred lambs at 9s, 166 cross-bred ewes at 12s, 55 cross-bred lambs at 10s lid, 301 cross-bred owes and wethers at 10a 6d, 79 fat merino wethers at 7a Bd, 42 cross-bred lambs at 10a, 2 Lincoln rams at A2 2s, 13 English Leicester rams at A 3 10s, 5 English Leiceatera at A2 50, 3 Lincoln rams at A2 2a. In cattle 1 sold 2 fat steers at A 5 15s 6d, 2 at A 3 7a 6d, 6 two-year-olda at A 3 Is, 1 fat steer at A 5 18s, 1 at A 5 7a 6d, 1 heifer at A 6,2 at AG, 1 fat cow at A 7 10a, 1 at A 6 17s 6d and 2at A 6 10s. In nigs I sold 2 porkers at Al 15s 6d, 7 at Al‘lsa and 6 at Al 3s, &c. Horse Market.—On Saturday, at Bullock’s Arcade, tho usual weekly horse sale was held. The entry would have been a good one, but waa spoilt by a heavy shower of rain in. the morning, in consequence of which moat of the animals sent forward were old stagers, but I succeeded in. getting rid of R. fair number at prices satisfactory to vendors. This Saturday I hope to see some really good horseflesh in the yards, which will be a, change from the usual run of old crocks which are entered for sale. Clearing Sale,— One of the most successful clearing sales ever held in the Ashburton County took place at Tara, Mr D. Brick’s estate, on Friday, March 3, The entries consisted of 8000 sheep, 30 boises and all kinds of farm implements in first-class order. There was a large attendance of buyers and others, and bidding won vory keen, no doubt on account of the appearance of the’stock, which refloated every credit upon their lata owner; and I may say that out of the 9000 sheep offered there were not 100 culls. Prices obtained for sheep were:— 3000 merino ewes (from Higafieid and Greenhiil Stations) averaged 5s lid all round, 880 first-cross fat lambs at 12a lid,- 1434 firsfe-erosa fat lambs at Us Od, 890 first-cross lambs at 9 a 2d, li3C cross-bred wethers at 12s 6d, 1312 fat merino wethers at Bs, &c. The horses wo re all of first-class stamp, and I am glad r.o cay that in every case they realised their full market values. There was not much demand for implements, but ail wero sold at fair price?, and T may say that all the sales effected were perfectly satisfactory to tho vendor and purchaser, and if all the stock in this district was ss well cared for as that of Mr Brick, Ashburton would be [a model County..
