GENERAL BOOTH.

London, Jan. 21. General Booth appears to bo getting really anxious about the iuture of his enterprises, and I do not wonder at it. Every week now some new scheme for raising the necessary money cornea out, yet none of them somehow geem to yield much. A fresh statement was issued last Saturday. In this the General announces that of the £05,000 imperatively required only £15,000 has been subscribed. He publishes the names of members of the classes who have subscribed. Amongst these, the tit Jawed Gazelle points out, those or the Earl of ijnslow, fsir Henry James, and the other members of the reoeut Enquiry Committee do not appear. “ If," asks your contemporary pointedly, “these gentlemen, as the General contend?, thoroughly justified him, their conduct is surely odd. One naturally expects Mr Booth's whitewashes to back their opinion." The truth, an experienced Charity Organisation Society man assures me, with regard to tho inability of the General to ro*arouse public mtpreut in hi? cchemo is that it lute ceased to he either a royalty or a sensation. Moreover, tho Prince of Wales’ recent letter exercised a strong influence amongst tho moneyed middle classes. Many of these had diverted subscriptions from other charitable channels in order to help General Booth, and, consequently, his Royal Highness’ remarks struck home. They there and then repented, and have gone back with tho New Year to tlw.-iv old menus. It is r mistako to cuppoio that if a fresh charitable call comes on the average man he increases the sum total of his donations.
