KAIAPOI BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The adjourned meeting of this Council was held on Wednesday night; present—the Mayor, and Councillors Weston, Stanton, Hopkins, Evans, Brighting, Bugg, Butt and Anderson. Letters were read : From Mr Goldthorpe, complaining of young people destroying the footpath in High street. The matter was referred to' the police to attend to. From Mr Johnson, asking that broom trees growing on the embankment in Jollie’s street might be cut down. The request was granted. From Mr F. Horrell, offering to lease; the Council reserve on the North road. It was resolved to invite tenders, to be in by next meeting. From Mr G. H. Blackwell, Secretary to the Mutual Improvement Association, asking the Council to take steps in the direction of forming a swimming bath for the use of residents in the Borough. The letter was ordered to be received. From Messrs Garrick and Co., asking that drainage might be provided for the Pier Hotel property in Charles street. ' After some discussion, during which Councillor Bugg pointed out that when the Council some months ago proposed to carry a drain down the right-of-way, by the hotel, the owner declined to have anything to do with it, it was resolved that the Council would not contribute to the cost of the private drain now being mads. Councillor Weston reported for the Finance Committee, the receipts for the past fortnight to be £47 4s 6d, debit balance general account £572 18a lOd, credit balance loan account £6O 15s, and recommended for payment accounts amounting to £25 14s sd. The report was adopted. Councillor Evans reported, for the Cemetery Committee, that it advised that one month's notice of termination of engagement should be given to the present caretaker, and that applications for the vacant position should be invited. The report was adopted. The meeting then terminated.
