ATHLETICS.
SOUTH CANTERBURY AMATEUR ATHLETIC CLUB. The South Canterbury Amateur Athletic Club held its twenty-second annual meeting yesterday, on the grounds, Otipua road. The weather in the morning looked very unpromising, as rain fell up to nine o’clock, but after that hour it cleared up, and tne day was very fine, with a pleasant cool breeze blowing. The Club’s very handsome grounds. never looked better, great attention -having been paid by the caretaker, Mr Young, to the. cinder track, which was in very good oirdor, considering the amount of rain that has lately fallen. The officials all worked well, and got the various events off in good time, the Hon Secretary, Mr Ci H. Tripp, devoting especial attention to his work. The attendance was fair, and there were a number of visitors from Christchurch and Dunedin. The following are results: — Putting 161 b stone—C. E. Smith, 30ft 2|in, 1,- E. T. Rhodes, 29ft IHin, 2. F. C. Perry and G. N. Fielder also competed. Throwing the Cricket Ball—E. A. Robinson, 94yds 2ft, 1; H. W. Postlethwaite, 83yds 6it, 2. G. N. Fielder, C. E. Hassell, W. Mendelsoa and C. E. Smith also competed. 100yds Flat—N. L. Gurr 1. E. A. Robinson 2, G. Straoban 3. W. S. Waite also started. Strachan was quickest away, and kept the lead until half the distance bad been covered, when Robinson and Gurr passed him, Gurr eventually winning easily by about a yard, Strachan a good third. Time—llsec.
Pole Jump—W. J. Philp, Sft 3in, 1; H. W.Postlethwaite,Bft,2. C. A. Jefferson and F. C. Perry also competed. Half-mile Plat—N. L. Gurr 1, C. G. Rees 2, C. E. Smith 3. J. Whelan and W. Mendelson also started. When the pistol was fired Gurr at once pushed to the front, closely followed by Rees. This order was maintained throughout, Gurr winning by two yards from Rees, with Smith a had third. Time—2min I jsec. .One-mile Walk—W. Tossack 1, F. H. Chisholm 2. J. Hay 3. J. Ford, G. N. Fielder, F. H. Smith and C. H.Tripp also started. Hay led for the first round, but was passed by Tossock and Chisholm in the second round, Tossock eventually winning by ten yards, with Hay a bad third and the others a long distance off. Time—7min 52sec.
120yds Hurdles—H. W. Poatlethwaite 1, L. Matson 2, F. C. Perry 3. F. H. Smith also started. Poatlethwaite took the lead at the start and was never headed, winning by eight or nine yards. Time—17|sec. 480yds Flat —F. N. Gurr 1, G. Strachan 2. F. H. Smith and W. Mendelson also started. Gurr took the lead in the first twenty yards and won as he liked. Time—--53-|sec. Long Jump—H. W, Poatlethwaite/20ft ssin, 1; E. C. Hassell, 18ft 91n, 2. F. C. Perry, W. Mendelson and F. H. Smith also competed. Steeplechase, one mile and a half, ladies’ prize—C. G. bees 1, C. E. Smith 2. Ford, Fielder, Perry, Thomas, Rutherlord and Turnbull also started. Perry led for the first round, but was then beaten, and Reas, going to the front in the second round, closely followed by Smith, won, after a capital race, by about ten yards: Tima—9min 56|sec. 250yds Flat Race—N. L. Gurr 1, G. Strachan 2. F. W. Pish, W. Mendelson and E. A. Robinson also ran. Pish took the lead for a short distance, but was soon passed by Gurr, the Wellington man, who won by two yards; Fish a good third. Time—2B^sec. 600yds Handicap—J. D. L. Rutherford, 40yds, 1; J. Nelson, 85yds, 2. N. L. Gurr, scr, C. G. Rees scr, and R. R. Bowie 45yds also competed. Howie cut out the running, but Rutherford caught him and won easily, the former exertions of Gurr and Rees telling on them. Time—lmin IS-Jaec. The Ladies’ Cup was presented to the winner by Mrs Richardson, and the spurs to Smith. This brought the meeting to a close.
