The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is inaugurating a Band of Mercy in the city, and will endeavour to introduce cards in the public schools. It has done so in the Sunday-schools. Charles Harley and John Kennedy, for cruelty in overdriving in a match from Waihi to Tanranga, a distance of fiftysis miles, when Harley’s horse died fifteen miles from Tanranga, were heard to-day. The police asked for a heavy penalty. Harley was convicted, and fined 50s and costs £lO 19s. The case against Kennedy was dismissed, the constable’s evidence showing that his horse was not even hot when passing Katikati. WELLINGTON, Feb. 15. The annual conference of the Australasian Wesleyan Methodist Church will commence in Wellington, on Tuesday, Match 1, and will last about a fortnight. During their stay here the Revs J. Berry and W. Morley will deliver the report of the (Ecumenical Conference, recently held in Washington, U.S.A. Over one hundred ministerial members and lay representatives will ha iu Wellington during tha conference.
