ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES

On Saturday afternoon, shortly after one o'clock, as one of the Tramway Co.'s palace cars, driven by J. M'Conochie, was coming into Cathedral square, the ring connecting one of the swingle-trees to ttw car broke, and the horse attached to iha car by it swerved quickly round, ♦»V4rig the other horse and the car with it. Before the horses could be stopped the car Mwa into collision with one ot the verandah posts of Morten's buildings and •napped it. The horses’ heads came in contact with the plate glass window of M-.s Pope’s fancy work depot and completely ■mashed it. Fortunately no one was hurt. An examination of the ring which broke ihowed it was much worn by friction on hho hook, on which it worked.
