COUNTY COUNCILS.

SELWYN. A meeting of the Selwyn County Council was held yesterday; present—Mr D. M'Millan (Chairman), Messrs H. W. Peryman, R. Westenra, W. Boag, T. H. Anson, .7. Bennie, W. Dunlop, J. G. Murray and T. York. CHAIRMAN*B STATEMENT. The Chairman said that at the present meeting the Council would have to levy a separate rate in the Halswell riding according to notice already published, and to appoint an assessor to act for the Council in the claim for compensation brought by Mr C. Campbell. A special meeting had been called for noon to make by-laws under the Water Supply Act. Reports had been received from Messrs Wilson and Davies on the water-races, with a letter from the Sonth Waimakariri River Board, asking for a gauge to be put in at Mr Peagram’s land. A letter had been received from the Rakaia Road Board, referring to the suggested repairs to the High Peaks road. Mr O'Malley had reported that there had been a fire at the Bealey Hotel last week, but that the damage done was slight. HALSWELL. A motion was passed, making a separate rate of one farthing in the £ on all rateable property in the Halswell Riding for the period ending March 31, and payable in one sum on March 10. Messrs Quealy and Comer were appointed collectors of the rate. A letter was received from the Tai Tapu Road Board, complaining that the Board bad been charged with too large a proportion of the costs in the case of Gilmour v. the County Council, and stating that had the costs been equally distributed over the County, there woulff have been sufficient funds to the Board's credit to leave a balance after debiting the cost of clearing the Halswell. It was decided to reply that the Council could not reconsider its decision, which it deemed the fairest to all parties concerned. COMPENSATION CASE. Mr H. J. Hall was appointed to act as assessor for the Council in the compensation case of Campbell v. the Council. WATBE-BACES. A special meeting was held at noon to consider the new water-race by-laws,which were read through, and ordered to be further considered at a special meeting on the nest ordinary meeting day. The ordinary meeting was then resumed, and the reports of the Overseers of the water-races were dealt with. These were of a generally satisfactory nature, but did not contain any matters of special importance. HIGH PEAKS ROAD. The Rakaia Road Board, in replying to the Council’s letter in reference to Mr Edmund Ford’e complaint of the bad state of the road between Whitecliffs and High Peaks, stated that as the portion of the road referred to had not been formed by the Board, and was not required for any district traffic, the Board was not prepared to expend any money upon it. The remainder of the business was of a routine character. GERALDINE. The monthly meeting of the Geraldine County Council was held yesterday. The reports from the Bangers of the various water-supply districts were satisfactory. The Engineers reported that the timber for the Saltwater Creek bridge had nearly all been delivered. The whole of the Waitohi water-supply works had been taken over from the contractors. In reference to the late floods, there had been no considerable damage done. The Secretary to the Treasury forwarded a statement of advances made to the Council under the Government Loans to Local Bodies Act as follows:—Raugi-tata-Orari water-supply, .£2788 12s Id; half-yearly interest, £69 14a 3d; Seadown, ,£2795 10s 8d; interest, £69 17s 9d; Woodbury, £565 2s 3d; interest, £l4 2s 7d; Orari-Waihi, £1657 3s 9d; interest, £4l 8s 7d; Geraldine Plat, £8738 8s Id; interest, £2lB 9s 2d. A telegram was received from the Department, stating that a voucher for £3OOO for the Waitohi Plat water-supply loan would be forwarded in a few days. Reports from the slaughter-yard inspectors were received, and it was decided to take action in one case. After some routine business, accounts to the amount of £644 Is 9d were passed, and the meeting terminated.
