CANTERBURY V. OTAGO. fPiB Pbbss Association.] DUNEDIN, Jan. 15. this match was commenced to-day on the Cariafarook ground. The weather was fine and warm, but the attendance of spectators was small. The wicket played well and, true, though it was not So fast as those fed he secured in Christchurch. Cuff won fehetoss from Harper, and elected to hat, ud Harman and Helmore were sent to the Wrfokei*; at 11.25 a.m. • The bowling was. •a&uste'd to Lawton and DAwnea. and both; teiinidterd.; were well on the spot, Lawton, phjlticnlarly bowling with a good length; was slow. In the fourth over of the day, Helmore was bowled for 2, and was succeeded by De Maus, who, playing nicely, was chiefly instrumental In fringing 10 up. With the score at 16 the Lancastrian put up an easy catch, which: Johnston accepted, and De Maus male" Way for Eaese, who, however, did not survive the over. Cooke was next man, but play continued to be slow; good bowling was backed np by admirable fielding, and the next half-hour’s cricket only produced fifteen runs, Lawton sending down maiden after maiden. At 30 Fisher took the ball from Downes, and Cooke was bowled ,by .Lawton for five. Cuff partnered Harman, and sharp running soon added ten to the total. At forty-seven Fisher bowled Guff for ten. Labatt was next, and Harman steadily increased his ■core, bat he was lucky in that several balls grazed his wicket. No other wicket fell before lanoh, and after the adjournment Labatt enlivened matters by fitting out merrily. At 81, however, he was howled, and Lawrence after scoring 5 was caught off the professional, and with the total unaltered, both Wilding and Bates left. \Ogier, last man, had not been , long at the Wickets when Harman, who it Was hoped woffld-carry his bat through the innings, was bowled by Downes for a wiU-piayed 45, the innings dosing for 96. 'Drabble and Baker went first to the 'wickets for Otago to the bowling of Labatt add .: Wilding. Drabble stepped out to Wildihg' and was promptly stumped by Ogier.for ;2. Lawton negotiated an over or fewo, and then fell to Labatt. Bell helped 10 to appear, and smart running between the wickets soon had 20 on the board, when Baker succumbed to a bailer from Wilding, who was relieved by Bates shortly afterwards. Bell scored rapidly by pretty cutting and driving, but at 86 was bowled by Labatt with a shooter, and M'Neil took his place. The incomer gave a hot chance to Seeae at point, and his partner should have been run out off the same ball. De Maus took up the bowling at Labatt’a end, and bad fielding helped Otago, and 50 was reached. Cuff supplanted Bates, and Labatt was put on again, with the effect of disposing of M'Neil in the slips—sß— s — l4. Williams began merrily, and the runs came mainly from boundary hits. Johnston lifted one high into the outfield, where Birman made a splendid catch. 84 —6—16. Harper felli Ibw, first ball to Labatt and Barker was caught off the same bowler, 92 and when Williams had made things' equal he was stumped.
