[Per Press Association.! AUCKLAND, Jan. 13. The newly-appointed conductor of the Auckland Orchestral Union, Mr Arthur Towsey, arrived from Dunedin to-day. The following cricketers have been instructed to commence practice in preparation for tbe match, Auoklaud against Wellington O’Brien, K. Nesll, Hewlett, J. Richards, Arneil, Wilson, A. M. Beale, H. B. Lusk, Fowko, Moresby, Gulston, Yates, Simeon, Hawkins, J. Mills, Lawson, T. Neill, Gardiner, Ecwe, Lundon and Browning. The party who propose to travel over the Stratford route are to leave on Monday morning next, going by train to Te Kuiti, thence on horseback to the Ohura Valley, walking thence forty or fifty miles ou the track for Stratford.

WELLINGTON, Jan. 13

The yachts Moacotts and Onawe, from Lyttelton, arrived at the Heads last night, and were towed in by tie Mana. A warrant has been issued for the arrest of a man who attempted to stab Dr Graoeon Monday night. The man, with whom tbe doctor had had a lawsuit some years ago, visited the surgery, demanding money, and being refused drew a pocket knife and attempted to stab Dr Grace ia tbe abdomen.

• Mr Frank Stevens, of the Evening Press, who leaves to-morrow for Western Australia, where he has accepted a position in the Public Works Department, was to-day presented with a purse of sovereigns ana a sovereign-ease by the local pressmen. He waa also made tbe recipient of a handsome present from the staff of the paper to which he has been attached. Mr W. H. Hardwick, organist of St Mark’s Church, died this afternoon. He had been ailing for some time from a soinal disease.
