Chairman, said ’ that the business • wish .. the,, adjourned consideration' of Mr Murray's motion to obtain an engineer’s opinion as to.the beet method of making a channel through the Ahuriri lagoon, and improving the canal; to take steps for making' a rate in the Halswell Riding to provide funds for clearing the Halswell; adjourned consideration of a letter from the Sakaia Road. Boafd, recommending further repairs to the Coalgate bridge; considera- • tion of report from the Road Diversion Committee, concerning a level crossing between Burnham and Norwood; consideration of reports ,oh , the Greendale auxiliary' water-race”; consideration of letter from the Ellesmere Road Board, referring to form of leases of gravel reserves; reception of A deputation, asking for assistance id prospecting. HALSWELL RIVER BATE. |& The Chairman stated that the ratable • value M>f that portion of the Halswell district which came within the drainage area was £39,940, which, at a farthing in the £, would realise £37 8a lid neb per M«nm. The district’s proportion of the cost of clearing the” river at the present contract price would be £45. The ratable value of the partof TaiTapudiatrict affected was ,£82,920, which, at a farthing in the £, would realise £77 Us 9d. TheTaiTapu: district’s proportion was £67105.-The latter would contribute somewhat more, and the former somewhat less than their due share, but it had been found that the farthing rate was the nearest which could be struck. On the motion of Mr Dunlop, seconded bjr Mr York, it was decided to strike a rate 05 one farthing in the £ in the Halswell Riding, for the purpose of clearing the river, and that notice thereof should be advertised in tbe.evening papers of Dec. 29. fMr Murray obtained leave to further postpone his motion iu reference to obtaining an engineer’s opinion on the Ahuriri lagoon. , .... COALGATE BRIDGE. On the motion of Mr Dunlop, seconded by Mr Rennie, it waa resolved to comply with the request of the Rakaia Road Board for permission to, order material for the repair ot the Coalgate bridge. ROADS DiyEKBION.COMMITTEE. -The, JRoada Diversion Committee reported, in reference to the application of the Courtenay Road Board for assistance ' ingetting ajevei crossing over,the railway beCween \ Burnham and ■ Norwood, that inquiries did not confirm the statements that the road had been laid off, across the Jinb\ now followed by the railway, before the. latter waa made. The mips in the jfLand Office seemed -to point to an opposite conclusion. . The Committee recommended that a reply to that effect should be sent, aud that if the Road Board considered w crossing necessary, it should arrange with the Springs Road Board rs to the proportion of cost which each Board should .pay; and should arrange with the Railway Commissioners accordingly. The Comm'tj.ee had ascertained that there was a precedent for the action of the Railway Commissioners, a simiiar case having occurred in-tbe Rakaia district, in which the Road Board accepted the Commis- ■ lionets’ proposition. The report waa adopted. greendale .water supply. .On the motion of Mr Anson, seconded by Mr Rennie, it was resolved —“ That the various, schemes for an auxiliary water aqpply for the Greendale district be submitted to a public meeting, to be called by the Council at Barfield, and that Mr Davies be requested to attend the meeting to.give any information required.” ,” MISCELLANEOUS. . On the suggestion of the Ellesmere Road ' Board, it was decided to alter the form of • desae of gravel,'reserves,.so as to provide fojr the tenants keeping gorse fences in . order, and, the ground clear;of gorffe;, ■; ” It was decided to give Mr Davies standing orders to, prosecute all persons tamper"ih(> wifh the water-races; v •Messrs E. Ford and Thomas waited on the .Council, and asked for a grant in aid of prospecting for minerals in the Malvern Bills, and for the Highpeaka road to be 1 improved. The deputation were informed that the Council had no power to spend funds in the manner asked. They were requested to- furnish further information as to the condition of the Highpeaks road. ■ Acopupta amounting to £3lB 4s Id were pissed for payment, and the meeting closed. .
