At the annual meeting of the Chamber of Commerce to-day, the Committee’s report was of a Tory hopeful oharM&ty.--While admitting that thefownttaoehad not improved mnoh daring the year.ths report stated that the agricultural and pastoral outlook was extremely bright and hopeful. The Chairman, Mr G. W. Niohol, referred to the great increase:in shipping . from the Bluff as evidence of the prodne# ;■ tiveness of the district. The tonnaga'.v using this port this year so far had ' 216,789 tons as agmaat 87,643 tons in 1889*; The limitation of sales of oats, consequent < on the protective tariffs in Australia* had led to feeling the pulse of the Hosw market, with the resalt-that it was found as profitable to ship to London ,at to Australia; and rapid steam audtha equalisation of freight promised to make the English market the better of the twcu Mr Niohol was re-elected President, and Mr Tothill Vice-President.
