FOOTBALL

TRIAL MATCH. The match between the team that .; recently defeated the Wellington repre- / sentatives and a team selected by Messrs. Weekes and Garrard produced an excellent display of football, and was very evenly contested. Despite the rather heavy ground, play was fast throughout both spells. In the first the representatives' scored five points to their opponents'; twelve; at the conclusion of the game the scores were—Representatives twelve points, possibles twenty. This is the second time in succession this season that the probables have been defeated. In the evening the Selection Committee, Messrs Harris, Cotterill and Smith, met and selected the following team to play against Otago on Saturday next;— Full-back : H. Wilson. THBHE-QtrAETEB-BACKB! - W.Baloh J. Marshall T. R. Cresewell Halt-backs; T. Gordon G. W. Forbes Fobwaebb : J.Cotv J.Hawkes A. Ebert 6. Humphreys F. Evans F. Leach C. Garrard J. E. Stokes H. Thacker. ; All of the above, with the exception of >' Forbes, have previously played for the ; Province in various matches. . Christ*' * church, Canterbury College and Motivate' 1 have four representatives each. East I Christchurch has two and Linwood one. A match was played at Kaiapoi on - Saturday between the Oxford First Fifteen and Kaiapoi Second. The* local team was victorious by fourteen points to nil. ■ The match Gladstone v. Lyttelton Rovers, resulted in a win for the former. Peacock, Forde and Forrester scored tries for the winners, one of which was converted, and for the losers Kirk and Rich' scored tries, from .one of which Berry placed a goal. ’ • ~ .. [Pbb Pbees Association.] THAMES, Sett. 5. The match to-day between the Auckland and Thames representatives resulted in a 1 victory for Auckland by eleven points to nil. During the game J. M'Gregor, one of the Thames players, received injuries in consequence of which he had to leave the field. OTAGO v. SOUTHLAND. DUNEDIN, Sept, 5. The annual match between teams from the Southland and Otago Unions was played to-day on the Carisbrook ground, which was m good order. The weather was excellent, the sun, however, being rather strong. The attendance was good. The match resulted in a decisive win for Otago by seventeen points (five goals from tries and two tries) to nothing. The scores, however, do not represent the state of the play, as the visitors had a splendid team of forwards, who more than held their. own in the first spell, hut the backs were poor in comparison with Otago’s, and when the leather was close to the latter’s lines, neither forwards nor backs seemed able to take advantage and score. The Otago forwards, if anything, were superior in the second spell. It was in passing tactics that the game was won, both backs and forwards of the Otago team, giving some fine displays of smart, clean and long passing. The visitors when they tried to pass were too slow, and contented themselves with short passes. The dribbling of the visitors’ forwards was excellent, but the defence of Otago’s backs, especially Cran, was far too good to break through. Crawford, the Otago half-back, played in his best style, the way in which he passed out the ball from the neighbourhood of, the scrimmage completely surprising his opponents. Treseder, Ekensteen and M'Robie were the best of the visitors’ forwards; Isaacs,. Montgomery, Johnston, M‘Cleary and Hanning being the beet of the local team. Grenfell at full back was safe but slow in getting his kick. The game was played in the best possible spirit. _______
