EARTHQUAKE.

[Pee Pekss Association.] NAPIER, August 17. There was a sharp double shock of earthquake at 10.17 p.m. yesterday. Another took place at 2 a.m. to-day. No damage is reported. * The earthquake was severely felt at Hastings, where bottles were thrown from shelves, chimneys ■were cracked, &o. A clock that had stopped for a long time was set agoing, and, as the swing of the pendulum was north and south, it is supposed that that was the direction of the wave. WELLINGTON, August 17. A slight shock of earthquake was felt in the city about two o’clock this morning.
