CHRISTCHURCH. Monday, August 3. (Before E. Westenra and H. Wesfcmacott, Baqrs.) Larceny.— William Aldous, aged 14, I pleaded “ Guilty 55 to a charge of stealing a bird cage, value 20s, the property of Mr Frederick Cross, from an empty house in Peterborough street. The_ Bench convicted the accused, and, it being the second time ho had been brought up, ordered him to receive twelve strokes of the birch. Attempted Burglary.— Charles Dewer, Arthur Feast, Harry Feast and Samuel Dobbinson were charged with burglariously entering the premises of W illiam Thomson, grocer and baker, in Colombo street. Chief Detective O’Connor said that the accused had all admitted being there, and ho asked for a remand. Dewer had a number of keys in his possession when he was taken. The Bench decided to hear the leading evidence. A, A. Godfrey, baker for Mr Thomson, said that a few minutes after eight last night he had gone to the shop to set hia sponge, and waa surprised to find the door of the bakehouse unlocked. He opened it and went in, when he saw someone with a light in the front shop. He thereupon struck a match, but the four lads rushed him and put it out. He caught two of them, but in the struggle ha had to let one go. The other one, Dewer, he gave into custody. He identified one of the Feasts and Dobbinson as being present, but he could not recognise the fourth. The Bench granted a remand till Thursday, and on Mr Feast applying for bail for his two lads, the Bench agreed to accept their own surety of .£2O, and two responsible sureties of £2O each. (Before Captain Preece, R.M.) ■Maintenance. —James M'Master was charged with failing to obey an order of the Court to pay 10s a week towards the support of his four children, who are under the supervision of the Charitable Aid Board. The arrears on the order amounted to .£3O 10s on June 29. Defendant made want of work an excuse for his inability to pay, and was sent to gaol for sis months 5 hard labour. (Before Captain Preece, E.M., H. J. Hall, and R. Westenra, Eaqs.) Civil Cages.— -Kaiapoi Woollen Company v. Edwards, £lB. Judgment for plaintiffs by default.—Same v. Claxton, £32 Gs 2d. Adjourned to August 10.— Preston v. Kick, £l2 10s. Adjourned to August 17.—Barry v. Hedworth, £2 6s 2s, for rent. Judgment for plaintiff for amount of claim and costs. KAIAPOI. Monday, August 3. (Before R. Blakeley, J. L. Wilson and G. H. Blackwell, Esqa.) Drunkenness. —A first offender, charged with drunkenness, was dismissed with a caution, he having been locked up twentyfour hours. Civil Gases. —J. Dippenheim v. Paratene Te Utu, claim 19s lOd; judgment for amount and costs, Bs.—R. Evans v. F. Tobins, claim £4 16s; judgment for plaintiff. —D. Heney v. J. Haraption, judgment summons. C. Wright appeared as agent for plaintiff. Tho authority produced was held by the Bench to be useless, as it was a general one, and the rule of the Courts in the northern district was that agents must produce specific authority in each case. The case was adjourned for a week.
