[Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, July 14. A hitch has arisen between the Harbour Board and the Victorian Public Works Department over the lease of the big dredge. By some oversight it waa not specifiedim the agreement of the charter between the two bodies that the charterers ot the dredge were to undertake the work of fitting her for sea. As tho equipment of the dredge and the dismantling and rigging her according to marine regulations would probably absorb a whole year’s charter money, the Auckland Board declined the liability. Negotiations are proceeding by cable and a satisfactory settlement is expected. [Per Press Association.] MAETON, July 14. A remittance man, named W. Charley, attempted to cut hia throat with a tableknife, at the breakfast table, at Hunterville, this morning. He inflicted a long, but not deep gash, which hied freely. He was brought to town by a constable, and sent to Wanganui Hospital. OAMAEU, July 14. John Yaraston, an escaped lunatic, was arrested yesterday at Papakaio by the police. He escaped from the Seacliff Asylum on July 10, arrived at Papakaio yesterday, and hailed up a settler’s house. The occupants turning out in alarm, Yarnston took possession of the house, and was arrested with difficulty _by tho police, and brought to town at midnight. Ha escaped once before from Clyde, at which time while at largo he committed an assault on a girl. DUNEDIN, July 14. Three cottages in South Dunedin were burned down this morning. It whs reported in town that Susan Stark, one of the occupiers, was burnt, hut she turned up in a half-drunken state. Mr Justice Williams refused to hear Dr Stenhouse’s petition to declare Mrs Eesseler a participant in the relief fund, because he was interested, having subscribed.
