THE EIGHT HOUR MOVEMENT. [Special to Press Association.] [Received June 23, at 10.20 a.m.J LONDON. June 22. At a meeting of carpenters and joiners, in Hyde Park, a resolution was passed demanding eight hours, and an increase of a penny an hour in wages. A monster meeting of miners was held at Southport; the attendance numbering upwards of 80,000. Among those who addressed the meeting was Sir Charles Dilke. A resolution was carried demanding the recognition of the eight hours’ principle by the employers. fP*a Press Association,! EMPLOYERS’ CONFERENCE. WELLINGTON, June 23. The Conference of delegates from the Employers’ Associations in the Colony opened to-day. The representatives present were—Mr J. E. Watson (Invercargill), Mr Keith Ramsay (Dunedin), Messrs G. Booth, G. H. Blackwell and C. P. Halbert (Christchurch), Messrs J. F. Charton and A. Heather (Auckland). ’ The morning’s sitting was taken up in considering the Labour Bills at present before Parliament, but the result of the deliberations is not communicated to the Press. The Truck Bill and Shop Hours Bill were considered and several amendments suggested, which will be forwarded to the Government. The Factory Bill will he discussed to-morrow. The Secretary of the Employers’ Association states that he has obtained as many shearers for Queensland as are required, and that the men leave in a few days. LABOUR CONFERENCE. The Labour Conference has finished discussing the Industrial Conciliation Bill, and the delegates express themselves very well satisfied with the provisions of the measure. Only a few minor alterations will be suggested to the Government. The Eight Honrs Bills, introduced respectively by Messrs W. Hutchison and George Fisher, are now under consideration. The Conference will close about the end of the week.
