ACCIDENTS AND FTALITIES.
SODDEN DEATH. - Mr Richard Manack, a well-known BMident of Christchurch, died yesterday ewenisgat. the Zetland Arms from choking while taking his tea in the public dining toon of the hotel. Mr Marrack was not ba the habit of staying at the Zetland, but having attended the' Addington market daring the day, he called there and said he was going to atay for the night.' He was sitting near the head of the table, and was conversing with Mr Walker, when suddenly the -latter noticed'something wrong and called the waiter, who led -Mr ' Marrack iatoaaother room. 'Mr Walker then telephoned ' for -Dr - Robinson, and sent a jpeiaenger for Dr Patrick, both of whom arrived shortly, but-only to find Marrack dead." He .'had been eating Irish stew, and it is supposed that in talking a piece had lodged in .hu throat, causing suffocation. The' deceased w* 8 formerly a butcher in CdMabor street, but Has recently been residing in the Selwyn district. He was aet married, and is believed to have been fftatwo yean of age! An inquest will be Seldto4ay.
Yesterday morning, aa the half-past tenv itriu&i fromtowta was passing the Carlton Hotel, a horse in a dray which wait being-led by a son of Mr John JTra*e, took fright and started to run in off -the roadway. Mr Kruse ran to his head; to'prevent his going on the footpath, hat'the horse was and crushed Mr Kruse severely between the -dray and the telegraph > pole. - The guard of the tram and some passengers picked him up and took him into the hotel,'and Constable Flawellyn, of St Albans/attended, and, haring secured a conveyance, carried the injured man to the Hospital, where he was attended to. Mr" Kruse’s injuries are undoubtedly : serious.' The victim of the accident is about twenty-five years of age.
