EARTHQUAKE.

WELLINGTON. June 2.

A slight shock of earthquake was felt in the city shortly after four o’clock this morning. MAETON, Junk 2.

Then was a very severe shock of earthquake at 4.20 a.m., throughout this district. It was preceded by a loud roar and a sound like an explosion. The direction was from north-west to south-east. BULLS, Junk 2.

After the earthquake this morning. Mount Tongariro was observed emitting a column of fire and smoke, which remained visible for some time. After sunrise the mountain was seen mote clearly than ever before from Bulls. BLENHEIM, Junk 2.

A slight shock of earthquake was felt here about half-past four o’clock this morning.
