MEETING OP COMMITTEES.

For permitting bad characters to frequent fbolr premises, Henry A. Sent,'Palace; Thomas Brooks, Central; and Eubina Cbaloa,Criterion, were cautioned, but the licenses were renewed. Charges of Sunday trading having been preferred against l£ : iD. Oaudwell, Yiotorian, and J. Sweeney, Golden pieece, the licenses were only renewed - 'on' the understanding that no illegal trading be permitted. The applieation of William M’Leod, Foresters’ Hotel, wis' adjourned till Jane 16, as a case was pending against the licensee.

THE KAIAPOI ELECTION. 'Modi-interest, w»b evinced in this election, which took place yesterday. Prom the opening of the poll until the close traps and buggies were busily engaged in bringing up voters, and the neighbourhood of the polling booth presented a very lively anuearance. The proceedings were Inos/ orderly. Several clergymen were prominent in the interests of the prohibitionists during the day, and that party had a further accession of strength in having a number of lady canvassers. As the time approached for closing the booth a good deal of excitement was, shown, as it was felt that the voting would be very close; The victory was , secured, though by a Strrow majority, by the moderates, who returned, four of their men. One prohibitionist,' Mr Barnett, secured a seat. The result, which was declared about 8.10
