Our correspondent writes:—Since last writing you the long-wished-for rain has arrived. It has given the plough a chance, and oar farmers have not been slow to take advantage of it. It has considerably benefited the autumn-sown grain, some few paddocks of wheat being already green. The entertainment - loving public has been treated to three lectures—two on temperance by Mr Knott, and one on “ Canadian Life,” by the Rev W. Cruden, all of which were fairly attended. Unfortunately two of them fell on the same evening, Friday. This was also the meeting night of the dancing class. I was not able to attend all three ; but X am told that the class did not suffer in consequence of the counter attractions.

On Wednesday last the Oddfellows held a special meeting for the purpose of electing a Trustee, a Secretary and a Treasurer, consequent upon the retirement of Messrs N. Harris, W. A. Garnett and G. Gleet, the last-named having been Treasurer since the establishment of the Lodge, sixteen years ago, and to whom its financial success is greatly due. Votes of thanks were heartily given to the retiring officers. Messrs J. Power, jun., was elected Trustee, and Mr G. Preece, Secretary. The School Committee held its usual monthly meeting on Monday evening, all the members being present. The master’s report complained of the non-attendance of some pupils, and of the irregularity of others, and the Committee determined to inform the parents that, unless the children attended more regularly, compulsion would be used. The caretaker was reappointed for tho current year. The Secretary was requested to again call the attention of the Board to the repairsmecessary to the school and the master’s house. The remaining business waa of a financial nature, accounts (including teachers’ salaries) to the amount of £29 17s lid being passed. With the usual votes of thanks to the Secretary and Chairman, the meeting terminated.
