Alleged Assault ‘ and ' Eobbeey. James Taylor alias Scottie alias Thompson, was charged with • assaulting Charles Hadfield, and robbing him of a watch and cliaiu valued at £i Iss, a .£1 note arid half a sovereign, on the night of May 29 in Manchester street. The same accused was also charged with assaulting Constable Ramsay, in the execution of his duty. Charles Hadnsld: Swore that he lived, in Sydenham, and left Burke’s Hotel at about 11.15 theprevious evening, to go home. Witness was walking down Manchester street. When near Lee Goon’s hoardinghouse, accused came out of a doorway, hit him in the eye, knocked him into the gutter, and " went through ” him. Accused then ran away. Witness then gob up and reported the affair to Constable Eamsay, and as he was telling him about it accused came np. Cross-examined: When accused took the watch from him, the chain broke in half, the piece (produced) remaining fast to witness’ waistcoat; When accused took the watch ho passed it behind him to a woman who was standing near. Constable Eamsay swore that when accused was arrested he closed with the witness and both fell, and in the struggle accused kicked him on the head and face stunning him for a moment. Took him to the lock-up in a cab. Accused was immediately recognised by complainant whan be came up to them. Accused was remanded on both charges, at the request of Inspector Pender, until June 8,
