VESSELS HOMEWARD BOUND. SAILING VESSELS.

X Rouen, France. Captain W. J. Featherstone, who had charge cf the steamer Talune, is well known at Lyttelton, and was at one time mate of the Harbour Board’s tug. Ho is now in command of the Oonah, another of the boats recently added to' the Union Steamship Company’s fleet. Mr Wilson, chief officer of the Talune, is well known at Lyttelton, and was last here as master of the Hobart barque Natal Queen. Mr Hannan, second officer, is, likewise, no stranger to Lyttelton. He served his time in the employ of the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company, and afterwards was second mate of the barque Myrtle Holme, which was here a few years ago. The ship Brambletye, which has arrived from Newcastle with 2300 tons of coal, was loaded by Messrs George M'Clatchie and Co., and comes to their order instead of Mr C. W. Turner’s, as previously notified in this column. The ship commences this morning to discharge her cargo. THE S.S. TALUNE. Early yesterday morning the first of the fleet lately owned by the Tasmanian Steam Navigation Company, and which has just passed into the hands of the Union Steamship Company, arrived in Port from Sydney, vii Wellington. The Talune is a new vessel, bnilt only last year. She is, in every respect, a most useful class of steamer, as she has splendid accommodation for passengers, and, at the same time, is especially fitted up for carrying cargo. She is schooner-rigged, with two masts and two decks, and as she has a nicelooking elliptical stern and straight stem, with top-gallant forecastle and short poop aft, she is almost a facsimile, as far as outward appearance goes, of the steamers Waihora and Tarawera. Her framework is of steel, and her dimensions are—2Bo£t long, 38ft 2in beam and 21ffc depth of hold, which give her a gross tonnage of 1695 tons and a net register of 1284 tons. Her engines, which were constructed by the boilders of the vessel, Messrs Eamage and Ferguson, of Leith, are of the improved triple-expansion principle, and are supplied with allthe most modern engineering im-provements,,-such. aa Weir’s feeders, and

evaporators and special pumps. The diameters of her cylinders are 23in, 37iu and 61in, with a piston stroke of 45in. Steam is generated from two large doubleended steel boilers 16ft 6in long by 12fb 9ia diameter. The working pressure is 1601 b. Upon a consumption of coal of 30 tons per day she can do a little better than 13 knots, when her engines indicate over 2000 horse-power. One special and most important feature in the construction of the vessel is that she is provided with two high-speed exhaust fans, which are worked under the induced draught system to ventilate the ship. The saloon, officers’ quarters and holds are all connected with the fans, and a constant stream of fresh air can be poured Tn. The vessel was built expressly for the stock and fruit trade between Melbourne and Hobart, hence this special feature, which no doubt will make the steamer greatly appreciated for the carriage of horses and other stock to Australia. These fans are driven by a pair of compound engines, made by Paul, of Dumbarton. The electric light is in use throughout the ship, and she is supplied with several group incandescent lights, which are portable, and can be used down the holds for working cargo. She is built to carry water ballast, and is supplied with five tanka capable of holding 500 tons, which are pumped out when the vessel is to take cargo. Steam Blearing gear, by Muir and Caldwell, and several other minor points of modern invention are to be seen in connection with her machinery. Three spacious hatchways provide ample space for the rapid loading and discharging of cargoes; indeed, on board the Talune there are facilities for the rapid working of cargoes the like of which has not before been seen in Lyttelton. At each of the three hatchways there are two classes of wmobes, friction winches and clog winches of an improved pattern. Tho Talune is, without doubt, a moat valuable acquisition to the Union Steamship Company's already splendid fleet. It has not yet been definitely decided whether or not she will remain in the New Zealand trade, but the chances are that she will he laid on during the busy season, or in the event of any further opposition offering. She is commanded by Captain Chatfleld, late of tho Mararoa, with Mr Wilson chief officer, Mr Hannan second and Mr Dawson third. Mr Doolin has charge of the engine-room, with Mr 0. Smythe as second, Mr R. Wallace as third and Mr A. Smyth as fourth. She will go into dock at Lyttelton on Monday. TELEGRAPH NOTICE BOARD. In the Supreme Court this morning the Chief Justice delivered judgment in the case of Richardson and others v. the owners of the ship Eangitikei. The claim was for salvage arising in the Napier roadstead, where the ship was in danger through dragging her anchors. His Honor decided that AUOCO should be paid to the owners, masters and crews of the steamers Fanny and Ahuriti, who went to the assistance of the Rangitikei. The judgment carried costs. AUSTRALIAN SHIPPING. THE TEKAPO IN QUARANTINE. Sydney, May 29. The Tekapo arrived from Wellington in the harbour last night, and anchored off the Quarantine station. The reason the vessel did not comeup to the wharves has not yet been ascertained. The Tekapo had one case of measles on board. The vessel was released after being confined for two hours at the quarantine grounds.
