Mr D. Thomas reports upon the live stock market in the Ashburton district for the week ending April 25, aa follows, viz On Tuesday, at the Ashburton yards, the usual weekly sale of live stock was held. The entry of sheep was again a large one, but owing to the continued dry weather prices were not so firm as they havq, lately been. This was most noticeable in broken-mouthed merino and cross-bred ewes and lambs of every description. Young cross-bred sheep for turnips or ewes for breeding purposes realised nearly as much as they have done any time during the last three months. The totals yarded for the day consisted of 8586 sheep, 37 rams and 24 head of cattle, of which my entry was made up of 4745 sheep, 28 rams and 24 head of cattle. In sheep my principal sales were:—lS6 crossbred two-tooths 12s 2d, 248 two-tooth cross-breds 15s lid, 20 fat cross-bred ewes 10s 7d, 29 do 10s 4d, 53 fat cross-bred ewes 10s Id, 139 cross-bred two-tooth 12a Bd, 21 cross-bred cull lambs 6s 4d, 13 woolly merinos 5a lOd, 28 merino ewes ss, 97 cross-bred lambs 6s 4d, 511 cross-bred lambs Ga 2d, 318 cull merino ewes 2s 6d, 146 cross-bred lambs 7s 9d, 98 cross-bred ewes 7s 7d, 83 crossbred ewes 8s 9d, 71 four and six-tooth ewes 5s 6d, 200 cross-bred lambs 7s. 956 first-cross lambs 8s 2d, 137 second-cross lambs 8s 6d, 828 cross-bred lambs 8a 6d, 270 merino ewes 2s 9d. In rams, I sold for Longbeacli 24 rams at from IJgs for aged rams, 2-igs t‘or two-tooths, and 2£gs for ram lambs. Tor other clients, 4 aged rams at 12s. In cattle the demand was very slack, and values obtained are not worth quoting. On Friday last I held my usual fortnightly skin sale, at which I catalogued 913 skins and 9 bags wool. There was a good attendance of buyers and spirited biddings, resulting in a clearance at very satisfactory prices. Best pelts made 3s to 3s Bd, second quality 2s to 2s lOd, bast merinos 2s to 2s 9d, second quality Is to Is 3d, inferior and dry from Id to Bcl each. Wool in bags 4sd, s£d to 7d per lb; pieces If d to 3.Vcl per lb.
