THE COLLEGE.
BOARD OP GOVERNORS. An ordinary meeting of the Board of Governors of Canterbury College was held at the College at 3 p.m. yesterday; present Messrs P. de C. Malet (Chairman), R. Beetham, A. E. G. Rhodes, W. Montgomery, T. W. Stringer, P. D. S. Neave, H. R. Webb, Hons W, Reeves and E. C. J. Stevens, The Chairman said that there was a vacancy in the Waimate High School Board, and that the election to fill the vacancy would take place at the next meeting of the Board. The Chairman read a letter from the late Registrar of the College, written during his lifetime in London, thanking the Board for their great kindness to him during his tenure of office, and especially during his illness, and saying that it was only fair to the Board, as he did not think that there was any chance of his returning to New Zealand, that he should resign his position. The Chairman said that the position had been offered to Mr A. C. Wilson on terms which would be read to the Board in Committee, and it was further proposed to write to Mr G. P. Stedman’s relatives in Sydney, sympathising with them in their loss, and conveying the Board’s appreciation of the late Mr Stedman’s services. The Chairman laid on the table the accounts of the Boys’ and Girls’ High Schools, as audited by Mr John King, Government Auditor, and asked for authority to sign the accounts. The permission was granted. The list of Governors* exhibitions to the Boys’ and Girls’ High Schools, won by public school scholars, was laid on the table. On the motion of Mr H. B. Webb, seconded by the Hon W. Reeves, the Board went into Committee. The following business was taken in Committee: — Mr W. Izard was, on the recommendation of the College Committee, reappointed lecturer in jurisprudence for the year 1891. On the recommendation of the School of Engineering Committee, Mr E. Dobson was reappointed lecturer on civil engineering for the current year. The recommendation of the School of Art Committee, that Mr W. K. Sprott bo appointed a permanent assistant-master to the school, was also adopted. The Special Committee, appointed by the Board on Nov. 24,1890, to take into consideration the advisableness of establishing a lectureship in music, recommended that such a lectureship be established as a tentative measure. The Board adopted the report, and authorised Messrs W. Montgomery, T. W. Stringer, L. Harper and the Hon W. Reeves, the Committee previously appointed, to advertise for applications and make all necessary arrangements in connection with an appointment. The Committee reported progress and the Board adjourned.
