WELLINGTON ITEMS.
[Per Press Association,] WELLINGTON, Feb. 9. HARBOUR BOARDS. Government have replied to the deputation re Greymouth and Westport harbours, that they will withdraw three officials from the Boards, and replace them by members nominated by the Government. This will have the effect of throwing the proceedings open, to the public. When Parliament meets further proposals will probably be submitted. PUBLIC WORKS. The following instructions hare been issued by the Minister for Public W orksln future, in the general terms and conditions of all Government contracts a clause be inserted that the Engineer in charge and Clerk of Works be instructed not to recognise any sub-contracts. That subletting works or having same done as piece work shall he a ground for cancellation of a contract, and penalties on ; a percentage basis on the value of the work found to have been done by sub-contract or piece work shall be imposed. MINISTERIAL MOVEMENTS. The Minister for Mines left for the Mahakipawa goldfield this afternoon, for the purpose of settling a dispute in connection with the Government contract. A dispute having arisen at Stratford, over the County road, the Minister for Lands leaves for that district by tomorrow morning’s train, to personally look into the matter. Ho expects to return on Saturday, but possibly may visit Napier before returning. The Premier will probably leave for Wanganui on Thursday morning, where he will be banqueted that evening. The Native Minister goes to Auckland at the end of the month, and will escort the Governor over the Thames and Coromandel goldfields. VOLUNTEER ENCAMPMENTS. The localities of the Volunteer encampments for next Easter are now decided upon. That for the North Island will be at Palmerston North, and for the South Island at Oamaru. No restriction will be placed on participation of corps, but the cost will be limited to the amount of last year. Lieutenant-Colonel Stapp will have charge of the camp at Palmerston North, AUCKLAND, Feb. 9. Sir George Grey returns from Eotorua on Wednesday next, and will leave by the Waihora, on Feb. 24, for Sydney, to be present at the Federal Convention; THE EGMONT SEAT. HA WEE A, Feb. 9. Messrs Bruce and M'Guite have been nominated for the Egmont seat. No others are expected.
