Melbourne, Jan. 29. To pick both the handicaps for th# Australian Cup and Newmarket Handicap to pieces—for they are .full of blonder a, would occupy too much of your space, and would serve no good end. With' the exception of Crackshot, I fancy Mr Barnard has been too severe on all the New Zealanders. However, to make » long story short, I fancy the winner of the Newmarket Handicap is concealed in the following twenty:—Marvel, Too-Soon, Merriment, Victor Hugo, • Magic Circle, Pygmalion. Matador, Investigator; Newton, La Hose. The Harbour , Light,- Montrose, Swertba, Neriasa, Casuist, TojW;3J*dfe Sun Spot, Courteous, Havilah and Conceit. In the Cup:—Greygown (if he does not go for the Newmarket Handicap), KingJ liam, The Spot, Crackshot, Tahtalloii, and--Whakawai. Gauged through Eussley.e brilliant performance atCaulfield on Saturday, when he was beaten by a neck by Steeltrap, Merriment must be very hard to beat in the Newmarket Handicap, and Greygown for the same reason, when looked at through Tarcoola’s form, must very nearly land the Australian Cup.
