If you’ll undertake to shout for all hands, we’ll consent to taka the speech as read.” "All right,” replied the member, "it is a bargain.” Then a solemn-iooking individual got up from a hack seat, and said " filr Chairman, after hearing the very able speech delivered by our member, I have pleasure in proposing a hearty vote of thanks and confidence.” The motion was seconded and carried, amid laughter, and the whole party adjourned to discuss the drinks. That was a sensible way of getting over a very stiff formality# and it is a pity it is not oftener resorted to.
