The local branch numbers ninety-seven. THE FACTORIES AND SHOPS BILL. MEETING OP EMPLOYERS. A largely-attended meeting of manufacturers, shopkeepers and employers of labour generally was held last evening in the Corn Exchange. Mr C. P. Hulbert presided. Admission was by ticket, and reporters were not admitted; and we are indebted to the Secretary for the following : report: — ! The meeting was called for the purpose, of considering the Factories and Shops Billnow before Parliament. J The following resolutions were unam|f mously carried, and copies ordered to b® sent to the Government and every uiembef of Parliaments (1) “That, in the opinion of this meeting the proposed Factories and Shops Bill nos before the House of Representatives if altogether unnecessary, harassing, an| calculated to Injure and retard trade ano industry. The circumstances of manufa<jj» turing in New Zealand are not of th® nature that requires such legislation as l| evidenced by the inquiry and report at the recent Sweating Commission.’’ § “ (2) That the present Employment « Females and Others Act is working satij|factorily, and if properly administered |b all that is necessary in regulating labour in this country.’’ i “ (3) That this meeting most strongly protests against any inspector under the prd? posed Act being appointed otherwise thd| directly by Government. That the proposal i duties of inspector under the Act are officious and inquisitorial, and the information J required from employers will entail unnecessary labour and expense. “ (4) That the sanatory provisions in the Act are already fully provided for in existing Board of Health Act. j “ (5) That the clausa making provision: for special dining-rooms, with furniture,. &0., for employees is oppressive and im-j practicable. j “ (6) That the suggested amendment in, connection with the employment of females type-setters under the age of eighteen year J is unjust and unnecessary. UNION. I A meeting of the Executive Comraittei of the above Union was held at their Hals High street, on August 2, Mr S. Brewem in the absence of the President, was vote! to the chair. The Committee present werl Messrs H. Hamilton, E, Schmidt, J. Halil T. Thompson, B. Rowse and P. Murray! Correspondence was read from the Trade* and Labour Council, Christchurch, rf sending three delegates to a meeting ai Christchurch on August 12. Resolved-# “That Messrs James Seed, J. Hall anf J. P. Morine attend the meeting.” It wap also resolved —“ That the Secretary writ® to all threshing-machine owners in the district, inviting them to attend a meeting of this Union on August 9; also, to invite Mr John Doak to be present.” Several other matters were left over for discussion at the next general meeting, and with a vote of thanks to the Chairman the meeting adjourned. j
CANTERBURY OPERATIVE BAKERS’ UNION. A general meeting of the above was held at the Shades on Saturday evening, the President in the chair. A large amount of correspondence was read from different parts, offering further support if required. A donation of £lO was received from the Bootmakers’ Union, Christchurch, towards defraying the expenses of the present dispute. During the evening, three delegates were elected to attend the Trades and Labour Council meeting on August 12 re labour demonstration. The meeting then adjourned to August 16.
