RETRENCHMENT.

TO THE EDITOR. Sib, —It is very satisfactory to read in the Parliamentary news that there is a determination on the part of the Opposition to reduce to some extent the enormous salaries paid to the Civil Servants, especially the heads of departments; and I sincerely trust that the ultimate result will be a very large reduction and saving to the Colony. When we find men drawing their .£I2OO, £IOOO, and £6OO a year, and looking at what they do for it, I am quite certain they are over-paid; and I will go further, and say that there is not a single officer in the Government service that earns or is worth £IOOO a year; and to try and defend such exorbitant salaries is all “bunkum.” It is said by some, if these reductions are insisted upon these highly paid officials will resign. Let them ; there are plenty of others in the Colony capable of taking their place. I hope members of the House will nob be frightened at such idle threats, but will unitedly go on retrenching until the salaries are brought down to something within the Colony’s means.— lam, &c., C.W.
