FIRES.

A fko broke out on Friday morning at Glendhau, near Motonau, at the residence of Mr James M'Lelland, who was absent from homo at the time. His v/ife, fancying that she detected a smell of fire, left her room, and examined the premises, but could find no sign of fire. On arising at her usual hour, she discovered that the chimney was on fire, and when assistance was obtained it was ascertained that the thatch around the chimney was also on fire. This shortly after burst into flames, and in a very little while the whole house, was completely destroyed. It was not insured. A large portion of the furniture was saved. The late occupants of the house have now only the shelter of tents. At Amberley, at the residence of Mr George M'Eae, a fire broke out at about four o’clock on Sunday afternoon, and had it nob been observed by a passer-by (Mr Adams), who promptly rushed in at the window, the premises would in all probability have been entirely consumed. As it was the fire was confined to the sitting-room, the furniture in which was nearly all destroyed. Mr M’Eae was outside the building when the alarm of fire was given; and on rushingintothepasaage,and opening the sitting-room, he found hia two little children, of about two and four, at the door, the room full of smoke, and the curtains in flames. On tho shops occupied by Lindberg and Furness, and owned by Mr Stains, .£IOOO in the Colonial. The estimated damage is £l5O. On Lindberg’a stock, which is greatly damaged.by water, the Colonial has a risk of £IOOO, of which £250 is reinsured with the New Zealand, and £250 with the National. And the Liverpool, London and Globe have a lino of £500; total, £ISOO. Mr Furness’ stock is insured in the National for £250, and he estimates his loss at £450.
