THE NEW PLYMOUTH MURDER.
NO VERDICT. [Per Press Association.] NEW PLYMOUTH, June 3. The Jury were locked up till ten o’clock last night, when the Coroner summoned them before him again. The Foreman said they were unanimously agreed on a verdict that deceased was wilfully murdered, and that suspicion rested on the accused; but were not likely to bring in an open verdict, or one of wilful murder against Mati Kahi. The Jury were accordingly locked up all night. At tea o’clock t-bia morning the Foreman of the Jury said they were still unable to bring in any other verdict than the one already read. The Coroner said he must record that as an open verdict. The Foreman protested against the verdict being taken as an open one, and asked the Coroner if he would take a verdict of three. The Coroner said he could not, as the Act was quite explicit that four out of six must agree. He remanded the Jury till two o’clock. At two o’clock, as the Jury could not agree, they were released without finding a verdict, but were bound over to attend the Supreme Court at the next criminal sitting.
