SALE OF HORSES.

The annual sale of horses from Mr John Grigg’s Longheach estate was held at tho Ashburton saleyards yesterday. Tho majority of the lots were fairly well-bred young hacks, which were, from colour, height, and other causes, unsuited to .tho Indian trade; and there were also soma draught stock of various ages, including some workers of useful stamp. There was a largo attendance, and for useful sorts fair competition, but the average prices were extremely low. The sale was conducted by Mr Thomas Bullock, in conjunction with Mr D. Thomas. In tho absence of the latter, through la grippe, his place in the rostrum was taken by Mr Peter Williams. About 120 head were offered, and only one was passed unsold. Draught yearlings sold at from £4 10s down to £3; two-year-olds £8 10s to £5 ss; three-year-olds £l3 10s to £lO 10s and £ 7 ; four-year-olds, broken, £l4 to £l3, unbroken £l3 down to £9 10s; working mares and geldings, five years old to aged, £ls 10s to £lO, and down to £G 15s; yearlings by Digby Grand and Young Berlin brought from £3 to £1 ss, two-year-old ditto £8 10s to £2, three-year-old ditto £l4 down to £3, the general run of prices being from. £6 to £S. A number of brood mares with foals at foot, by Montrose (by Apremont— Fleurange), Prince Frederic, Berlin, and other sires, and a foal to Prince Frederick and Xerxes, were sold at £6 15s to £3, the bottom being touched with the bid of 10s for a mare by Traducer—Charm. The foals by Montrose had considerable promise, but the young stock were in low condition.
