[Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, May 1, The Rev George Preston, of Napier, was inducted to-night as incumbent of St Mary’s Anglican Church, Parnell. It is reported that an Australian syndicate intends to build and conduct an hotel of twenty rooms at Rotorua. The vessel to be built for the Melanesian mission is to cost AOOOO. An assay of stone from Puhipuhi is said to have yielded two hundred and seventyseven ounces of silver. In regard to the labour demonstrations at Home tbe Auckland Knights of Labour bave passed a resolution sympathising with labour movements throughout the world in their efforts to obtain legal recognition of eight hours per day, and trusting that our Parliament will, in its forthcoming session, nass the Eight Hours Bill.
Several cases of influenza prevail at Otaumutu.
Mr J. J. Lester, an English geologist and naturalist, who has for some time past been employed in scientific researches in the Tongan group and adjacent islands, is now in Auckland on his way to England. NAPIER, May 1. At the monthly meeting of the Scinde Lodge, the oldest Masonic Lodge in the Hawke’s Bay district, last night, there was a large attendance of members and visitors. A resolution congratulating tho Craft on the formation of a Grand Lodge of New Zealand, was carried by acclamation. GISBORNE, May 1. Complaints are general as to the excessive charges for bringing cases before the Commission under the Native Land Act of last session. Many persons are withholding in tho hope that Parliament will, during the coming session, reduce the charges. For leasing the Harbour Board endowment, Tawhareparc Block 44,150 acres, only four tenders were received, applying for 7700 acres at 2d to 2.id per acre rental. WESTPORT, Mat 1. In tbe District Court to-day tho action Matthews v. Hodgson, Deputy-Official Assignee in Bankruptcy, for detenue of goods, resulted in a verdict for the plaintiff. The examination of T. Laurie, a bankrupt, was postponed to the next sitting. DUNEDIN, Mat 1. The case of alleged poisoning by deleterious matter in gingerbeer was re-heard yesterday and to-day, and decisiori'was again reserved. Two severe shocks of earthquake occurred at Queenstown this morniug. The Art Gallery project ia succeeding well. The Mayor and Mr James Smith each gave A 25. Two additional pictures are promised. • The terms of Mrs Campbell’s dedication of .£SOOO to the Dunedin Hospital are that the interest on the sum shall bo used ia providing medical comforts and nursing to the hospital patients.
