THE EXHIBITION.
[Per Press Association.] DUNEDIN, Jan. 15. The following entries have been received for the Exhibition Band Contest:—Christchurch Garrison, Btanmore, Sydenham, Addington Workshops, Burnham Industrial School, Auckland City (Impy’e), Taranaki Rifles, Napier Garrison, Wellington Garrison, Queenstown, Invercargill Garrison, Invercargill City, Oamaru Garrison, Oamaru Naval Artillery, Port Chalmers, Caversham, Dunedin Engineers, Dunedin Garrison, Dunedin Ordnance, Kaikorai, St Joseph’s Band (Launceston, Tasmania). The performance of “ Elijah ” at the Concert Hall this evening was a great success. The hall was crowded to overflowing. The principals were Miss Fanny Bristow (Melbourne), Miss Frederica Mitchell (Melbourne), Mr Piiscbell (Christchurch), and Mr J. Prouse (Wellington). All were in excellent voice, and as the choir and orchestra scored another success, the performance was one of the most successful held here. The Governor, Countess Onslow and suite, Rear-Admiral Lord 0. Scott, and Lord Carrington and suite will attend the concert to be given to-morrow afternoon. The judges at the band contest, in which four hundred performers are expected to take part, will be Signor Squarise, Herr Alfred Pleyer, and A. D. Macintosh, Wellington. In the quickstep competition the test will ha military as well as musical. The military judges will be Lieutenant-General Fulton, Colonel Morris, and Major Goring. In hops, only one sample was entered for competition by J. Wilson and Co., Dunedin, who were awarded a first certificate. Pale malt—Wigrara Bros., Christchurch, 1; W. Cuddon, Christchurch, 2, Black malt —Wigram Bros., 1; W. Cuddon and G. Lintott, Oamaru, 2. Barley—Manning and Co., Christchurch, 1; J. Speight and Co., Dunedin, 2. The Jurors in malt were Messrs G. L. Denniston, John Marshall, W. G. Neill and J. R. Dodson.
