BOROUGH COUNCILS.
EAIAPOI. At the ordinary meeting on Tuesday night there were present tue Mayor, and Councillors Blakeley, Butt, Wesion, Stanton and Doubleday. Tne newiy elected Councillors made th ordinary declarations. CORRESPONDENCE. The following was read : Prom Messrs W. Fraser, E. Feldwick, Gr. H. Wearing and W. K. May, resigning their seats as Councillors. On the motion of Councillor Blakeley these resignations were accepted. From Mr G. J. Webster, resigning all offices held by him. On the motion of Councillor Stanton this resignation was accepted, subject to the usual month’s notice, the Clerk to be released if the half-yearly audit could sooner be obtained. His Worship said the half-year closed on Oct. 15, but doubtless the Auditor could be obtained earlier. WORKS. The Borough Engineer’s report stated that the formation and metalling of Cass street East and West and Sewell street, were completed, and that a portion of Cass street West required covering. The lower wooden culvert in .Sewell street required to be taken up and replaced at a lower level. The contracts for clearing Bowler and Hilton streets were complete. Damage had been done to Casa street East by a resident draining his land thereon. The report also gave details of existing contracts, and recommended certain payments. The report was adopted. FINANCE. Councillor Blakeley reported receipts £33 4s 6d ; general account debit, .£623 6s lOd; loan credit, .£6lO 8s 4d. Accounts to .£lO2 3s 9d were passed for payment, and the report adopted alter some discussion relative to an item of £4 2s Id, expenses of an inspection visit to the Ashburton reserves by two former Councillors. SANITARY. The Inspector of Nuisances reported recommending that a supply of pans be procured at once. He had given notices as detailed, seventeen of which were not complied with. Adopted. APPOINTMENT OF COMMITTEES. His Worahip suggested that the appointment of Committees stand over till the extraordinary vacancies bo filled, and, on the motion of Councillor Weston, this was agreed to. Councillors Weston and Blakeley were appointed a Cheque Signing Committee. Councillors Doubleday and Stanton wore appointed a temporary Works Committee. Councillor Doubleday suggested that the Clerk take steps to fill the vacancies at once. On the motion of Councillor Butt, Councillors Blakeley, Weston, Doubleday, Stanton and the mover were appointed a Committee to draw up a schedule of duties and fix the Clerk’s salary. ORDINARY. Councillor Butt drew attention to the interest paid on overdraft, whilst none was got for the loan credit. Councillor Doubleday suggested that every item of loan expenditure he clearly shown by the Clerk. The Mayor said the books already showed this. The original loan appropriation was then read to the Council. His Worship said, in view of the Clerk having resigned, he did not iutend to enter into the circumstances under which access to the office had been refused. The Council then adjourned.
