THE KAIWARRA MURDER.
A SENSATIONAL STATEMENT. [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON. Sept. 18. A book entitled, “ Murder Will Out; or, The Mystery of Kaiwarra,” has been published by J. Eviaon, of the Catholic Times, embodying the story of the Kaiwarra murder. It is embellished with illustrations of Hawkins, Chemis, and members of the police and bar, who have figured at various times in the course of the proceedings, both before and after the Supreme Court trial. At the end the following statement appears " After the trial, a portion o£ the sleeve of Hawkins’ coat, which was stuck together with congealed blood, was opened, and examined with a microscope. In the part opened, stuck to the coat by the congealed blood, were found three hairs,' which had evidently belonged to a heavy, ill-kept, sandy moustache.” The writer connects this with statements made to Colonel Hume, to the effect that a man under the influence of liquor, foaming with rage, in possession of a gun, and acquainted with the locality, had a quarrel with Hawkins shortly before the murder. No cine, however, is given to this man ether than that he had a heavy, sandy moustache, nor does Mr Eviaon say by whom, or exactly when, the microscopic examination was conducted.
