[Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, Sept. 18. Subscriptions are coming in freely for largo amounts towards the funds for the Jubilee Regatta. A petition opposing the inclusion of the Waiorongomai township as proposed, in the Te Aroha Borough is to be sent to Wellington. Julian Thomas (the Vagabond) left for Sydney to-day. Captain Pye, Bruce, Annesley, and the six seamen of the wrecked ship Garston, left for Sydney to-day by the Tarawera. A sum of money raised by subscription amongst shipping people was presented to the Captain. WELLINGTON, Sept. 18. The annual balance-sheet of the Wellington Poultry Association shows a deficiency of £lB. The profit on the last show was £4l. Mrs de Castro, wife of the Rev C. D. de Castro, died last night after a protracted illness. NELSON, Sept. 18. His Excellency lays the foundation stone of the new Wesleyan Church on Tuesday. DUNEDIN, Sept. 18, The City Council to-night received an offer from the Qiilcher Electric Light Company, through their Wellington agent, for the lighting of the city by electricity. At a meeting of the Hospital Trustees, the question of a women’s ward and nurses’ home again came up. The Secretary of the Women’s Ward Fund, subscribed by the public, suggested that a Committee should be appointed to confer with a Committee of the subscribers. After a long discussion it was resolved to appoint a Committee of five medical experts to assist the Trustees in the selection of suitable plans for hospital additions, provided the money subscribed is paid into the Hospital Fund account.
The Port Chalmers Gas Company declare a dividend of 7 per cent for the year. At the Police Court to-day one of the drivers of Young’s palace cars was charged on information with using a car for the conveyance of passengers, having the gauge of all its wheels nearly corresponding with the gauge of the tramway rails. As this was one of a series of informations, the case was adjourned on defendant undertaking not to use the rails until the case was decided.
At a meeting of subscribers to the Macandrew Memorial Fund, it was decided to devote £SO of the sum remaining available (£236) to the erection of a monument over Mr Macandrew’s grave, and to allocate the balance to the erection of a fountain or other suitable memorial in the city.
