THE RIVER AVON.
Ibis not to be supposed that because the recent agitation for a dam in the upper portion of the river Avon has not been making itself prominent, that the matter is going to be allowed to die the natural death that the support accorded to it by the local bodies interested would suggest. Far from it. On the other hand, during this apparent 1011, some owners and occupiers of property fronting on the river between Cashel street and the Hospital, have been quietly talking the matter over, and have agreed amongat themselves to again approach the local bodies; this time with a scheme which must meet with approval and sympathy from every member of the community who has the interest of the city and its surroundings at heart. They ' have agreed to guarantee the whole cost of the construction of the dam, and leave it to the drainage Board to carry out the work, as suggested by their Engineer* They have, of course, put . their hands deeply into their pockets themselves, and as they hold themselves personally liable for the whole amount, they are making an appeal to-the public to back up their efforts with subscriptions towards the guarantee. It is to be hoped that this appeal will be liberally responded to, as but for this action on the part of the few who are moving in the matter, the river would have been left in its present unsatisfactory condition. Subscription lists towards this object will be distributed through the town, but meanwhile lists lie at Messrs Shaw and M'Lean's boatsheds, at Mr W. Thomson's confectionery establishment in Colombo street, and at this office.
