SOUTH WAIMAKARIRI RIVER BOARD.

The monthly meeting of this Board was held yesterday; present—Mr W. Boag, Chairman, and Messrs Taylor, England, Wilson, Money, Crooks, Hill, Peryman and Lambert. The Overseer’s report was' read. It referred to the unsatisfactory nature of the Auckland cement, and recommended certain works. The Secretary said he had been informed that the Auckland manufacturers had found out that a mistake had been made through an accident, and had promised to be more careful for the future. The only fault was that it would take longer to set. The agent had offered to charge nothing for the cement if it failed, and to charge only half-price if' it proved to be good. The only cost, therefore, was the cartage. The Works Committee were instructed to examine into the matter and report to the next meeting. The caretaker was empowered to do the works he recommended, subject to the direction of the Committee. Mr James Johns sent a tender for the lease, for one year, of one of the Board’s reserves. The tender was considered satisfactory. A letter was read from the Selwyn County Council regarding the cutting complained of by the Board. A letter was read from the Heathcote Road Board enclosing the amount of the rates collected. Accounts for £BO2 15a 4d were passed for payment. It was decided to re-deposit for one year the sinking fund. The Board considered the statement of arrears from the various local Boards, amounting to about £IOOO. It was resolved to write to the Boards, pointing out the necessity for prompt action on their part. The statement of the tenants’ arrears was read and dealt with. This concluded the business. The Board decided to interview the Premier on his return from the South with the view of inducing the Government to help the Board in the construction and maintenance of protective works at Chainey’s corner, on the ground that the works at that point have been the means of protecting the railway.
