EDUCATION BOARD.

I The Education Board of North Canter--1 bury held its usual meeting yesterday; | present—Messrs W. Chrystall (Chairman), ■A. H. Cunningham, T. 11. Anson, J. Eaddenklau, C. C. Bowen, H. W. Peryman, and E. G. Wright. ROUTINE. The business done by the Chairman was read and approved, and apologies were accepted for the absence of Messrs Saunders and Weston. BUILDINGS COMMITTEE. The Buildings Committee i reported that they held a meeting on July 31; present—Messrs Peryman, Anson, Wright. The following business was transacted; — Bare wood road—Mr Wright submitted a letter stating that the School Committee had decided on letting the schoolroom for dancing. It was resolved to inform them that if it were true that, notwithstanding the express wish of the Board, that they had let the schoolroom for a weekly dancing class, the Board would have to consider the advisableness of its recent decision as to tbe erection of a new building. Eewland—Tbe School Committee forwarded a statement of repairs required, estimated cost, .£5 2s, and represented the necessity of painting. The repairs were allowed, but tbe Committee were recommended to use plain instead of barbed wire, unless tbe barbed were required to keep out cattle. The question of painting was deferred. Glenroy—Mr Anson reported about the site for the new school at Glenroy, recommending that it be placed on Reserve 1165, fronting on the Downs road, five chains from its junction with the road between Sections 23710 and 23711. The recommendation was adopted. Lyttelton— An account for £3 Us 6d, the cost of repairs made by tbe School Committee, was not allowed, tbe expenditure having been incurred without previous authority. Clocks—An offer from Mr Sandstein to furnish school clocks at 25s each was accepted. Glentunnel—On the application of the School Committee, repairs to the spouting were -authorised. Wakanui— The School Committee forwarded an estimate of the alteration in the infant room recommended by the Inspector, amounting to £8 18s, which was allowed, on the understanding that the desks to be supplied must be in accordance with the regulations. Barry’s Bay—ln reply to an application from the School Committee for material for a dividing fence between the school and house, which they would undertake to put up, they were asked for an estimate of cost, and for further explanation as to the necessity of the fence. Contracts: Mr Green had an interview with the Committee respecting his contracts at Opawa and North road side side-school. The Clerk of Works was directed to give Mr Green a written statement of what was still to be done. Westcrfield—lt was decided to shift the fences so as to make the site correspond with the land transferred. An offer from the contractor for the schoolroom to do the work for £4 10s was accepted. Oxford East—An expenditure of £5 incurred by tbe School Committee for reflooring one of the class-rooms was allowed, this being among the repairs authorised. Le Son’s Bay—ln reply to a letter from the Library Committee, asking the Board to buy their room, which was attached to the school, it was decided that the room was not required for school purposes. Okain’s Bay—An application for a renewal of the boundary fences, was deferred, from want of funds. North Eoad—The School Committee complained of the insanitary condition of a creek near the school grounds, and asked the Board to represent the case to the Eoad Board. The Clerk of Works was directed to report as to the state of the creek. German bay—The sum of 30s was allowed for ladders. Normal School—An application from some students for leave to skate in the drill-shed was not allowed. Tenders — The following tenders wore accepted: Oxford East (repairs), G. Keats, .£115; Spreydon (repairs), Donaldson and Hiddleston, £lO3 13s; Bromley (alteration in infant form), D. Baxter, £l9 15s. Normal School—An alteration of the pipes from the closets similar to that made at Gloucester street was authorised. Christchurch West—lt was decided to call for tenders for the repairs to the spouting. Accounts—The following accounts were passed for payment: G. Calder, repairs at Gloucester street and the South belt, £36 5s 3d; J. Tayler, alteration of pipes, Gloucester street, £3 7s 6d; H. Byne, repairs to opouting, Gloucester street, £l2 18s 8d; repairs to hot-water pipes. Normal school, £2 Cs 2d. It was resolved to call the attention of the Christchurch East Committee to the fact that much of the expenditure at Gloucester street had become necessary only through the neglect of the caretaker.” The report was adopted. APPOINTMENTS COMMITTEE. The report of the Appointments Committee was read and adopted. The following is the business transacted by the Committee since last report—The following appointments were made:—Eaiapoi Island North, Mr W. Herbert, master; Loburn North, Mr J. S. Dalby, master; German Bay (main), Mr T. M'Gallan, master; Lyndhurst, Miss E. Eestell, mistress; North road (side). Miss A. Humm, mistress; Stoke, Miss B. Webster, mistress; Kaikoura Town, Miss H. Craighead, assistant; Little Eiver, A. Trevella, pupil-teacher. » REPORTS. Examination reports were received from, Mr Wood on St Albans (main and side) and Papanui, and inspection reports on Spreydon and Heatbcote Valley. inspectors’ salaries. The motions standing against the names of Messrs Bowen and Saunders were postponed for a month—the motions referring to the Inspectors’ salaries. The motion notified by Mr Cunningham re dividing the district into three parts for purposes of inspection was also postponed. CHANGE OP NAME. At the request of a petition from residents, the North road school’s name was changed to Belfast. CONTRACTS. The seal of the Board was affixed to contracts with D. Baxter, for improvements at Bromley; G. Keats, repairs at Oxford East; Donaldson and Hiddlestone, repairs at Spreydon ; and to pupil teacher agreement with Edith Howes. Kaiapoi, The Board went into Committee, and on resuming adjourned.
