CANTERBURY SALEYARDS.
to the editor. Sib, —A great deal is due to the Canterbury Saleyards Company from the public. In providing, as they have done, the means of disposal of stock by public auction, they have conferred a boon on the whole community. But in taking upon themselves the responsibility of providing a market they have at the same time incurred a certain responsibility as to the safety of stock received in their yards. That there are causes of complaint on the part of vendors that their sheep do not tally out as counted into the pens, is no secret. The grievance has existed some time, and la certainly not diminishing. It is for the Saleyards Company to take measures to abate this nuisance. I will not make any preventive suggestions, as there are men on their Committee quite capable of giving such directions to their officials as would lead to the total suppression of the evil; even if it should entail the cost of an extra official it would better become the Company than that such a state of things should prevail in their yards.—l am &c, A SUFFERER.
