The visitors were met at the railway station by a large number of local wheelmen, and were accorded an enthusiastic reception. Mr Kerr and Mr Burn, of Dunedin, will arrive to-morrow. The visitors seem in very good form. Dunedin was never so well represented as at present, and the excitement in wheel circles is most intense. Messrs Fred Wood, the celebrated English professional cyclist, and W. Brown, of the Erixton Ramblers, are going well, and will evidently show pace which will astonish the public.
THE LYTTELTON TIMES CYCLISTS.
The One-mile Bicycle Race of the Lyltelion Times employees, in consequence of some of the competitors being unable to attend on Saturday, was run off yesterday evening, in Hagley Park. There was a slight wind blowing, and the track at the east end was very bad, being covered with loose earth and sand, through which it was exceedingly hard to make headway. All those (six) who entered put in an appearance. Mr Richards acted as starter and judge. As soon as the word was given, Klein (250yds) passed Ardley (260yds, safety), and Woodward (50yds) ran up to Barlow (75yds), Merry (10yds) and M'Kay (scr) keeping their distances. The first lap was negotiated in this order. In the second lap, Ardley was out of the race. Just as Woodward had got through the " bad ” part at the end of this round, he unfortunately came down, and Barlow, who was immediately behind him, could not get out of the way in time, and came down also. This left Klein, Merry, and M'Kay to try for the trophies. At the commencement of the last lap, the first-named had about fifty yards lead, the other two racing neck and neck. As Klein was putting on a spurt on the south side, he leant over too far, and came a “ cropper," but soon was up and remounted, but not before Merry and M'Kay had passed him. It was impossible to say which of these two would win, but in going through the tr bad ” part M'Kay got the best of it, and won by a length, thus getting first prize, and Merry second. Had Klein, Woodward, and Barlow not fallen, the race would have been a splendid one, for all were going well; but such accidents will happen. RANGIORA. At a meeting of the Rangiora New Tear’s Sports Committee, held the other evening, it was decided that the funds at command would not allow of any special inducements being offered to Mr Fred. Wood to compete at the sports.
