It has been decided to build a Baptist church here forthwith. The Waterworks Engineer, after testing various coals, recommended the Westport. The Council has decided to continue the teat. WELLINGTON, Deo. 21. The Gazette notifies an alteration in the scale of charges in force on the HnrunuiBluff section of the New Zealand railways as follows:—Wool undumped from Dunback to Dunedin or Port Chalmers will be charged 4d per bale less than the classified rates. New Zealand war medals have been issued to the following individuals :—W. Harrison, private No. 2 Company Taranaki Rifle Volunteers; John Ahem, private Taranaki Rifle Volunteers; John H. Doole, Sergeant No. 4 Division Armed Constabulary ; Edmund Carr, Lieutenant Hawke’s Bay Militia; W. M’Callnm, Private No. 2 Company Taranaki Militia; W. Black, Private No. 4 Company Hawke’s Bay Militia. DUNEDIN, Dec. 22. A fire at Caversham Rise destroyed a four-roomed house owned and occupied by Joseph Ellis. Insurance—£3oo in the New Zealand office. John Duthie was fined 20s at the Police Court, for keeping girls in his factory after hours on Saturday.
