AUCKLAND RACING CLUB SPRING MEETING.

[Pbr Press Association,} AUCKLAND, Nov. 9. The Auckland Racing Club’s Spring Meeting was opened to-day at Ellerslie racecourse. Fine weather prevailed, and there was a large attendance of the general public. The racing throughout was of a first-class character, but surprises were the order of the day. Subjoined are the details:— TRIAL STAKES, of 70 sovs, .with a sweep of 2 aovs each to second horse. Weight-for-age. One mile. Mr W. Somerville's br f Balista, by Musket— Ouida, Syrs, 7at4lb I Hon E. Miiohelson's br f Fusee, 3yr«, 7st 41b (car 7at I01b) 2 Mr I). Twohill's br m Cinderella, 6yrs, Set Ulb 3 Tennyson, Lady Alice, and tiir Waiter also started. Betting—2 to lon the field, Cinderella, being the favourite. The start waa a good one. Cinderella was first away, but at the back of the course she surrendered the lead to Tennyson and Lady Alice, who, however, in their turn died away at the cutting. Balista, Fusee, and Cinderella landed together on the straight, and a great race resulted in their finishing in that order. Time—lmin 44£-sec. Dividends—£6 and £5 17s. Several breaks away occurred before the flag was eventually lowered to a fair start. Tartar and Cushia jumped off with the lead, but before. they had gone half a dozen strides Pearlshell came away from the head of the ruck, and leading all through had three lengths advantage as they passed the half-mile post. Entering the straight Hilda, Cushia, and Man Friday set out in pursuit of the flying leader, but they could never get on terms, and Pearl-shell won easily by a length from Hilda, who was the same distance in front of Man Friday, Cushia being fourth. Time—lmin 4sec. Dividend, £2 10s each machine. HURDLE RACE HANDICAP, of 80 bovb; with a sweepstake of 2 eovs each to the second horse. Two miles. Mr W. Garter's b m Coral. 6yrs, Set 31b (Collins) 1 Mr T. Gallagher's g g Peter Osbeok, aged, list 111 b (Hope) 3 Messrs Hayr Bros.' Ma Petite Fille, 9st 4lb (Hadfleld) 3 Magnesia was (he only other starter. Ma Petite Fille was the first to move when the signal was given. Magnesia being next, with Coral and Peter Osbeck together last. There was little change in positions until going out of the straight, when Ma Petite Fille was beaten, and Magnesia assumed command. Peter Osbeck ran through at the back of the course, and was leading Magnesia by halfa length at the mile post, when Coral, who hand been running a very patient race, waa called on, and coming with a steady run was even with Peter Osbeck as they jumped the last hurdle in tho straight, a magnificent race terminating in a victory for the Waikato horse by three-quarters of a length. Sir Walter (6st7lb), Britannia (Gst 71b), Loorina (Gat). Cannon (6st), also started. Betting : 5 to 1 agst Clogs, Victoria, and Balista; Clogs having the preference. The field was despatched in very even order. Cannon, Antelope, Clogs, and Britanuia, being all in a line in front of a closcly-packed second division, the foremost of which was British Lion, The first-named trio were in even order as the field raced past the stand, whilst Formo was last. At the turn Cannon fell away, and a little further British Lion, coming away from his attendants, ushered the field round the turn, Britannia, Antelope, and Clogs being together last. British Lion, having made a great show for half a mile, went back to his horses as the entrance to tho straight was reached, and Antelope ran up alongside him. Half way up the straight Victoria drew out from the ruck and joined British Lion and Antelope, and beating them in the last few strides, won on the post by a neck, British Lion being second, a head in front of Antelope. Then came Clogs, Leorina, Cannon, Balista, and Friendship, in the order named. Time —2min 40}sec. Dividend—£4 11s. SELLING STEEPLECHASE, of 70 boys. About three miles. Mr J, Chadwick’s b g Whalebone, aged. Set 41b (Using) 1 Mr Stephen’s Hawthorn, syg, Sst 121 b (JU2S)) ... 2 Mr P. J. Buxton’s br g Huntsman, Cyrs, XOst 71b 5 Five others ran. Hawthorn went off with the lead, on the field being sent away, but ho surrendered his advantage as they ran down the hill. Whalebone being first on to the course proper. From this point tho latter was never headed, and won by ten lengths. Torpedo fell during the race, but his rider was uninjured. Time—Bmin 11 Jsec. Dividends, £G 6s and £5 13s. SELLING RACE, of 50 sovs. One mile. Mr Thorpe’s g g Tho Cat, aged 1 Five others started. EI’SOM PLATE, of 80 eovs, with a swoop of 2 sovs each to second horse. Five furlongs. Lady Alice got the beat of a good start, and making every use of the opportunity went away at a great pace, but she was caught at the half-mile post by Fusee, who waa first into tho straight with a two-longths’ lead. Half-way up the straight Paddy came under the whip with a great run, and after a short struggle beat Fusee on the post by a head. Dividend —£S 16a. WANGANUI JOCKEY CLUB SPRING MEETING.
