The International Statistics Conference has commenced its sittings at Rome. The Board of Trade are endeavouring to have a Select Committee of the House of Commons appointed to inquire into the question as to the best appliances for preventing loss of life. Overtures were recently made to Turkey to join the triple alliance between Germany, Austria, and Italy, and a reply has been received intimating the willingness of the Porte to accept the proposal.
