In reply to a question, the Eight • Hon Lord George Hamilton, First Lord of the Admiralty, stated thatthe Queen’s review at Portsmouth on July 21 would include importantevolutions to test the defence of British seaports. THE CONFERENCE. A circular has been issued by Sir Henry Holland to the at the Imperial Conference, announcing the programme to be carried out at the Conference, and inviting suggestions for further subjects fordiscussion. THE CONSERVATIVE POLICY. LONDON, Mabch 22. In the House of Commons last nightthe Right Hon A. J. Balfour moved that no facilities be given for the* greater stringency of the law in Ireland without security of the present excessive rents. It is probable thatthe debate on the motion will last aweek. JUBILEE REJOICINGS. A grand parade and march past of Volunteers will take place before theQueen at Buckingham Palace on July 22. Balfour, Secretary for Ireland, will to-morrow introduce a Crimes Bill having many stringent provisions. . Mr Sandford Fleming, agent for the Canadian Pacific Railway Company, will bring up at the Imperial' Conference the question of a Pacific cable. A suggestion to consider the question of a general disarmament of all the European Powers, in order torelieve the terrible strain which Europe is at present labouring under,, is meeting with much favour. European capitals are sounding the Powers with, the view of ascertaining whether the proposal would meet with their approval. The question of choosing an occupant for the throne of Bulgaria is apparently no nearer solution. • Eueaia still favours the candidacy -of the Prince of Mingrelia, but in accordance with her present policy of abstention from active interference she is not pressing his claims to the post. The Sobranje is prepared to re-elect Prince Alexander. , Shares in the Bank of South Australia have fallen one pound, in consequence of the withdrawal of £IOO,OOO from the reserve. Affairs in Afghanistan are not of a satisfactory nature. The hill tribes are restless and eager for revolt, and arising is generally expected.
