NEW ZEALAND KENNEL CLUB.

A field trial of sheep dogs, held under the auspices of the New Zealand Kennel Club, took place at the Agricultural and Pastoral Grounds, Colombo road, on Saturday. There was a fair attendance, and the closest interest was evinced in the proceedings. Messrs M'Beath and P. Elder officiated as Judges, Mr T. Wadsworth as referee, and Mr Dombrain as timekeeper. The trial alloted to each competitor was to drive three sheep from one pen to another placed in the middle of the ground, and thence to a third enclosure on the north side of the ground, the pens being about 260 yards apart. There were ten entries, "but only seven of these put in an appearance. Mr Gould’s Glen was the first to be slipped, but after struggling for some time with a refractory lot of sheep was withdrawn. Mr M'Candlish’s Bose also retired after a similar unsuccessful attempt. Mr M'Parlane’s Spring, a nice steady worker, and well under control, succeeded in accomplishing his task in Bmin Iseo. Mr Golding’s Don worked well, but was unfortunate with his sheep, and ultimately gave up the contest. Mr E. Taylor’s Spot handled his sheep very cleverly, but hadan awkward lot to deal with, and occupied 15min 36seo in completing the circuit. Mr Jeff’s Nell, a small bitch, did wonderfully neat work, and made the beat time of the afternoon, getting round in 7min 29Jaec, and it is difficult to understand why she wasoverlooked by the judges. Mr Matthew’s Glen was rather slower than the rest, but worked very patiently, and placed his sheep well. The trials were completed shortly after 3.30 p.m., and the Judges then made the following awards:—Glen, 1; Spot, 2 ; Spring, 3. The dog show was well patronised on Saturday, country visitors displaying considerable interest in the various exhibits. In the evening an auction sale of dogs was held, and was fairly successful.
