THE ST ALBANS LOAN.
TO THE BDITOB. Sib, —A writer who signs himself “ St Albans No. 2 ” has taken upon himself the task of pulling to pieces my letter which appeared in your issue of March 7 with reference to the above subject. He deals in a lot of high-falutin language, and endeavours to cast a slur on me because of the fact that I am not as ignorant as himself. He must, indeed, be a perfect ignoramus if he does nos know the meaning of certain terms 1 used. As Ido not intend to answer “No. 2” in the same strain as he has chosen to adopt, I shall merely content myself with saying that if he will disclose his name I am prepared to meet him and to uphold all the assertions 1 made in my letter, and prove them to his satisfaction at the same time. lam not ashamed of my name, if “No. 2” is of his ; and although I have sometimes the pleasure of being “mounted on a ton of coal," I do not think there is any disgrace in that. It is evident, however, “Mr No. 2’’ does. With regard to his advice as to not allowing “any fool to screen their nonsense behind my name,” I can assure “ Mr No. 2 ” that such is not the fact; and if “Mr No. 2” has not received a thoroughly practical education, I have done so, and read, perhaps, more than he has. If he cannot understand the language I have used, then I am sorry for him, and should advise him to take my advice and go to school at once. ..There is one close enough to his residence, and perhaps he will there learn what is the meaning of the “conglomeration,” as he styles it. Such vulgar phrases of “ Does your mother know yo're out,” &0., are not becoming in anyone who tries to take another to task for the phraseology made use of by the latter; and, in fact, the whole style of the letter is not anything approaching what one would expect from a person who evidently prides himself on being a literary genius. But enough of this, Mr Editor; I main* tain that if the St Albans people only carry out the scheme as was proposed by the Mayor, and which appeared in your issue of March 16, they will confer a great benefit on the Borough, notwithstanding anything to the contrary those may say who choose to differ from me in opinion.—l am, &c., ALFRED BEERY. St Albans, March 16.
